Morgan- Post #3: Kearney, Nebraska

Friends,

September 4th began with a quick run at the Best Western Fitness Center in Kearney, Nebraska. Unfortunately, the fitness center has an open sauna and none of the staff bothered to turn the air conditioning on-so it was a steamy, sweaty start to say the least. I did meet a lovely lady who shared a chuckle with me when the news came on. John McCain...poker? Don't you know Candy Crush is all the rage right now?

Anyway, we started our trip around 9:00 a.m. (a little late) and we spent the entire day driving from Illinois, to Iowa, to Nebraska.

This is going to be a rather short post as there is nothing going on in these states, at all. #sorryLadyGagaIdon'twantaNebraskaman

Some things I noted/learned:
  • We were in the prairie for many states before I realized it
  • The famous novel, "Little House on the Prairie" is not titled, "Little Girl on the Prairie," as previous thought-a common mistake I'm sure
  • Why is there so much corn everywhere?
  • The landscape became hilly in Iowa
  • Nebraska has no tolls and a speed limit of 75 mph-even they know you don't want to be there

WE FOUND THE WINDMILLS. Who called that!? They are HUGE!!!

A single fin! It's bigger than an eighteen wheeler!

It's a paradox: pollution and clean energy in one picture.

I also found a truck with Ashley's name on it-shout out to Poggie!

We did make one stop of interest yesterday: "Tree in the Middle of the Road." When Taylor and I first found this on the map, we knew it would be one of the most memorable places we went-largely because no one has heard of it.

I wasn't sure what to expect. I sort of assumed it was in the middle of a main highway. In retrospect, I don't know why I thought that. We had to drive a few miles off I-80 West, over a rickety wooden bridge, and onto a dirt road to get to it. By the time we were done taking pictures of it, the Tree in the Middle of the Road had a British accent and an opinion on everything-favoring the physical "middle," the political "middle," and any and all applications of "middle." Take a look at it below!

Taylor and the American Flag stuck in the tree.

Taylor and the flowers. I make her so tired!

Mom, I even got the Renbrook "R" with it. :D

Providing feelings of comfort and security, the stop sign adjacent to the tree has several bullet holes.

And lastly, some odd Nebraskan sculptures.

All-in-all it was a good, long day.
